The banjo was just sitting there being a banjo. And then Bela Fleck came along and turned it into something else. Jake Shimabukuro seems to be doing something similar with his ukulele– an instrument ripe for the shredding. And he’s doing it without a band. I predict just under fifty percent of rock bands in 2007 will feature a ukulele. Now if we could just find the Van Halen of dulcimers to raise its prominence in non-folk situations. Or a zither crossover king. Come on! Who’s with me on the zither tip? Watch the Third Man and tell me you didn’t fall in love with the zither.
