This is an interesting link Rybot sent to me and the gang on the ever-increasing loudness of mastered recordings. Forgive the silly sample Null, the writer, offers up, but believe the lesson– mastering of pop tunes these days involves ungodly amounts of compression that often squeeze the life out of a song. Our ears are so conditioned to hearing music this way, we’re taken aback when we hear well-mixed music that has some room to breath. Consider this analogy. It’s like smooshing your face up against a window. You’re much better-looking when your face doesn’t come into contact with the window. Granted, smooshing your face against the window can and does create some interesting visual effects. But if you want to see what someone really looks like, un-smooshed is the way to go.
