MTV MUSIC – I Want My MTV

This could be big. I think it’s pretty safe to say MTV probably has the biggest library of videos. It’s funny how they had to call the site mtvmusic.com since MTV, the brand, is no longer really associated with music. In my mind, mtv.com should be where you go to find music videos, and mtvcrap.com is where you go to find all the other, well, crap.

I’ll have to wait until I can get in front of my TV to see if the fullscreen quality is adequate. Right now, it’s looking a little pixelated. This is completely irresponsible, but I’m going to compare mtvmusic.com and pitchfork.tv.

video compression– winner: pitchfork.tv
fullscreen just looks better. mtvmusic.com looks blocky in fullscreen. and i was looking at pitchfork’s low bandwidth version. bring the high bandwidth, and there is no competition.

video content quality new videos– winner: pitchfork.tv
pitchfork.tv’s featured content is bleeding edge and usually engaging.

video content quality old videos– winner: mtvmusic.com
remember all the videos you watched as a kid on mtv? well, they’re all there pretty much.

audio compression– no clear winner
i’m not an audiophile, but there is obvious compression from both parties. to my ears, any audio quality differences are negligible.

side-by-side comparison
(note: the pitchfork.tv video is mastered a tad louder on the deerhunter video. the mtvmusic.com video is mastered louder on the sigur ros video.)
