in case you didn’t know…

I have listened to this, and it embodies awesomeness to the highest degree. Buy it when it arrives in stores May 2. Danny rocks the tabla big time.

Many of you hipsters out there are dumbfounded by my loyalty to Tool. My tastes sometimes illogically span genres in your eyes. I liken Tool’s appeal to that of the Simpsons. A friend of mine, a Dartmouth graduate, shares with me a love of the Simpsons. It really pissed him off when he found out his sister’s boneheaded boyfriend was also a fan. Everything he loved about the show, the clever high-art references, the social commentary, he imagined couldn’t be appreciated by this bonehead. But of course the Simpsons works just as well on a totally different level. Homer does stupid stuff and gets his head bonked a lot.

I realize that a lot of Tool’s fans are also into bands that I absolutely despise whom I will not mention. On the rhythm tip, Tool pulls off a lot of proggy stuff. Maynard’s miasmas are gorgeous, making Tool a lot more accessible than the likes of Dillinger Escape Plan, Candiria, or Meshuggah– rhythmic gods in their own rights. But the bottom line– Tool rocks hard. Rocking hard tends to attract the meatheads and inspire a slew of crap bands. As an example of the mindset, I had a conversation with one meathead at, what else, a Tool show. It was at the SB Bowl. We were right at the stage. One of Maynard’s things at the time was to wear prosthetic boobies, bra, and a wig. This guy starts talking to me with a disgusted look on his face, “What the fuck is Maynard doing? That’s gay.” I could see he was really disappointed. I told him, “I think he’s doing it to mess with you.” He just couldn’t let it go.
